Relax, There’s Sedation Dentistry

Research shows that up to 20% of people experience moderate to severe anxiety when it comes to going to the dentist. This fear can lead to missing appointments for dental work or not scheduling them at all, which can in turn negatively impact not only ones dental health, but their overall health.

Given the overt risks of not taking care of your teeth and gums, what can be done to alleviate the overwhelming stress that can be associated with getting in the dental chair? Sedation dentistry is becoming an increasingly popular option.

What exactly is sedation dentistry and what procedures can it be used for? Sedation dentistry, also known as “sleep dentistry,” uses medication administered by a dentist to help relax a patient prior to a dental procedure. The good news? Sedation dentistry can be used for any dental procedure, from routine cleanings to extractions, as there are different levels of sedation that can be administered:

  • Minimal sedation relaxes a patient while keeping them awake and alert
  • Moderate sedation will make a patient drowsy and could impact their ability to fully recall the procedure
  • Deep sedation nearly puts a patient to sleep, but allows one to be easily awakened if need be
  • General anesthesia puts a patient into a deep sleep to be fully awakened once the procedure has ended

At Linden Oaks Dental, we offer a variety of sedation options to help ease your mind as you are going into a dental procedure. As always, we’re here to help! Contact us if you’d like to learn more about our sedation dentistry offering.
