Having your wisdom teeth extracted isn’t as intimidating as you may think it’d be. Yes, it’s a surgical procedure for which you’ll be put under IV sedation – aka “twilight sleep,” a type of anesthesia given through a vein — but it’s also a very standard procedure that millions of people undergo each year.

Your wisdom teeth are the four teeth located in the very back of your mouth, two on top and two on the bottom, that typically descend in your late teens or early twenties. If you’re lucky, they won’t cause you any problems upon their arrival. However, many people experience severe gum and jaw pain due to the new teeth pushing into existing teeth, causing them to shift uncomfortably and grind together. 

Wisdom teeth can also be difficult to properly care for because they are located so far back in your mouth; getting a toothbrush or dental floss back that far in your mouth to fully clean is a tricky task. As a result, many wisdom teeth end up developing cavities, or worse, begin to rot.
